Microcurrent Therapy
One of the main modalities that I use in my clinic is Frequency Specific Microcurrent. for those who are new or need more information, this section is for you. To see how microcurrent can be applied to your health care, please see the section called Microcurrent Menu for the various options available.
What is Microcurrent?
Microcurrent is an electrical stimulation modality typically used by chiropractors and physical therapists. Traditionally, it has been used for treating injuries, reducing inflammation, breaking up scar tissue and increasing the rate of healing in the body. Microcurrent operates in millionths of an amp. This is approximately 1000 times less than what a typical TENS unit or other electrical modalities do. Your own cells make current in the microamp frequencies similar to the microcurrent machine.
What is Frequency Specific Microcurrent?
Frequency Specific Microcurrent (or FSM) is a series of specific frequencies that seem to match the tissue type and condition in the body. The combination of the two opposing frequencies when applied correctly make changes to the body. Tight and tense muscles become relaxed and normal. Scar tissue and adhesions are gone or reduced.
How does Microcurrent work?
Previous animal studies have shown that microcurrent works by enhancing the production of ATP (cellular energy) by up to 500%. It also increases protein synthesis by 70% and cell transport of amino acids by 40%. What this means to you is that healing processes are accelerated.
How do the frequencies work?
The frequencies work on the principle of biologic resonance. As the specific frequency is applied it works with the resonant frequency of that tissue type and creates changes in the tissue. Once changes are made and the condition stabilizes, improvement can be long lasting.
Will I feel the electrical current?
The current is so low that it doesn’t stimulate the sensory nerves. However, patients report warmth or relaxation of the tissues
Are they any side effects?
Due to the fact that microcurrent can create changes in the tissue quickly and removal of waste products can occur, possible side effects, if any, may include nausea, fatigue, drowsiness and a temporary increase in pain and a flu-like feeling. These side effects usually occur within 90 minutes after a treatment and can last 24 hours. Drinking 2 qts of water immediately after treatment can minimize side-effects. Most patients do not have side effects.
Are there any contraindications?
There is no record of any permanent harm being done to anyone treated with microcurrent. Contra-indications include avoiding a pregnant uterus, through the eyes and brain, or anyone with cancer.
