What is a Microcurrent Facial?

Microcurrent therapy has been used for years to repair injured and damaged tissue in the chiropractic and physical therapy arena. In the 1990’s an acupuncturist in Florida used microcurrent to treat Bell’s Palsy. The sagging facial muscles responded and the patient was pleased with the result. An idea was born. Could this same treatment effect the healthy side of the face as well? Treatment was applied and the patient was pleased to see even the healthy side had a reduction in facial wrinkles.
Microcurrents are very gentle pulsed current, usually in the sub-sensory level of a millionth of an amp range. Microcurrents are usually used at low frequencies for therapeutic results. It is successful for pain control, rehabilitation, wound healing and energy balancing.
Microcurrent also enhances cellular metabolism, by increasing ATP (cellular energy) production by up to 500%. It also frees amino acids in injured cells, as well as promoting ion transfer through cell membranes. This is what accelerates the rate of healing and cellular repair. Microcurrent stimulates collagen and elastin production.

Since that time, a protocol was developed specifically for the face with the following benefits:
Wrinkle reduction
Adjustment of facial muscle tone to more youthful firmness to reduce or eliminate sagging areas.
Normalization of skin coloration to more healthy hues.
Reduction or elimination of acne, blemishes and age spots.
Increase in collagen and elastin production to fill out and contour the face.
Other Side Benefits
The basic protocol was developed by Darren Starwynn O.M.D. who practices acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Phoenix. Dr. Starwynn and others using his protocol series reported that 85 to 90% of clients noticed other benefits such as:
relief of menstrual cramps,
menopausal discomfort alleviated,
weight loss (averaging 5-15 lbs over a series of 3-10 facial sessions)
Back and neck pain relieved
Depression or emotional malaise lifted, mental clarity increases, increased feelings of inner calm and emotional centeredness.
Digestive discomfort and constipation relieved
Writer’s block removed
Fatigued lifted, energy levels increase
Insomnia relieved
Hormonally-based acne permanently cleared up
How can these side benefits occur when doing a Microcurrent facial? In the acupuncture model the meridian pathways connect the face with the viscera (your organs). There are 6 acupuncture meridian channels have points directly on the face. Those meridians are the Stomach, Small and Large Intestines, Triple Warmer, Gall Bladder and Urinary Bladder.
Additionally, there are two meridians that have their terminal point on the face. Those are Ren (or Conception Vessel) and Du (Governor) channels. These two extraordinary points link all the organs and glands to the brain and Central Nervous System via afferent and efferent receptors of the autonomic ganglia. What this means is that all organs are linked to the face directly or indirectly through the meridian system.
